Setting Up and Using PowerOn with a PC

Setting Your Campus PC to Wake Up Remotely

To wake up your campus PC from a remote location, you will need to set its BIOS and network adapter as indicated below. The procedure will depend on the manufacturer of the computer. If you have difficulty with these settings, contact the NC State Help Desk during business hours.

Dell

  1. Set the BIOS as follows:
    1. Turn on your campus Dell machine.
    2. As soon as you see the Dell logo,
      start tapping the F2 key
      until you get a settings window.
      If this window does not open, allow the machine to continue booting up, then turn it off and start again.
    3. From the menu in the left-hand panel of the settings window, select:
      Power Management
    4. In the Remote Wake Up window, mark the Enable radio button.
    5. To save your changes, click on: Apply (or press another button or key if specified).
    6. Click Exit.
  2. Set the network adapter as follows:
    1. Open the Control Panel of your campus PC.
    2. Select Device Manager.
    3. To allow changes, click Yes.
    4. In the list, click on the Network Adapters drop-down menu.
    5. Right click on the adapter's name.
    6. Select Properties
    7. Click Power Management
    8. Mark all the checkboxes.
    9. Click OK.
  3. Go to myip.ncsu.edu.
  4. Record the following for later use at your off-campus PC:
    • Campus PC's IP address (e.g., 152.1.67.212)
    • Campus PC's computer name (e.g., italy.cnr.ncsu.edu)
  5. IMPORTANT: Follow the instructions below for Setting Your Campus PC to Go to Sleep.

Hewlett-Packard

  1. Set the BIOS as follows:
    1. Turn on your campus HP machine.
    2. Start tapping the Escape key.
    3. When the menu appears,
      select BIOS Setup (press F10).
    4. In the left-hand pane of the next window, click on:
      System Configuration.
    5. In the right-hand pane, click on:
      Built-in Device Options.
    6. In the Built-in Device Options window, in the
      Wake on LAN section, make sure that
      Boot to Network is selected.
    7. In the bottom left corner, click on the
      floppy disk icon to save your changes.
    8. Reboot your machine.
  2. Set the network adapter as follows:
    1. Open the Control Panel of your campus PC.
    2. Select Device Manager.
    3. Click Yes to allow changes.
    4. In the list, click on the
      Network Adapters drop-down menu.
    5. Right click on the adapter's name.
    6. Select Properties.
    7. Click Power Management.
    8. Mark all the checkboxes.
    9. Click OK.
  3. Go to myip.ncsu.edu.
  4. Record the following for later use at your off-campus PC:
    • Campus PC's IP address (e.g., 152.1.67.212)
    • Campus PC's computer name (e.g., italy.cnr.ncsu.edu)
  5. IMPORTANT: Follow the instructions below for Setting Your Campus PC to Go to Sleep.

Other PC

  1. Set the BIOS for your campus PC as indicated on this page:
    BIOS Setup Utility Access Keys for Popular Computer Systems.
  2. Set the network adapter as follows:
    1. Open the Control Panel of your campus PC.
    2. Select Device Manager.
    3. To allow changes, click Yes.
    4. In the list, click on the Network Adapters drop-down menu.
    5. Right click on the adapter's name.
    6. Select Properties.
    7. Click Power Management.
    8. Mark all the checkboxes.
    9. Click OK.
  3. Go to myip.ncsu.edu.
  4. Record the following for later use at your off-campus PC:
    • Campus PC's IP address (e.g., 152.1.67.212)
    • Campus PC's computer name (e.g., italy.cnr.ncsu.edu)

Setting Your Campus PC to Go to Sleep

IMPORTANT: Be sure to set your campus PC to go to sleep after you have used it from a remote location. Otherwise, it will continue using energy needlessly and reduce the advantage of PowerOn.

Setting up for sleep will vary, depending on:
  • manufacturer
  • operating system
  • technical support group

NOTE:If you are using a managed desktop, DO NOT attempt sleep setup. Please contact your IT support personnel for assistance.

To set up for sleep in Windows 7:
  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Open System and Security.
  3. Open Power Options.
  4. Select a power plan
  5. Click Change Plan Settings.
  6. Make the modifications that best reflect your needs.
  7. Click Save changes.
  8. Close the Control Panel.

Using PowerOn From Your Off-campus PC

  1. If you have not already done so, follow the instructions above for Enabling Your Campus PC to Wake Up Remotely.
  2. If you have not already done so, at your on-campus PC, go to myip.ncsu.edu.
  3. Record ONE of the following for later use at your off-campus PC:
    • Campus PC's IP address (e.g., 152.1.67.212)
    • Campus PC's computer name (e.g., italy.cnr.ncsu.edu)
  4. Using your off-campus PC, go to poweron.ncsu.edu.
  5. From the menu bar near the top of the page, select PowerOn Your Device.
  6. Log in with your Unity ID and password.
  7. In the Remotely PowerOn Devices window, enter ONE of the following:
    • Campus PC's IP address
      or
    • Campus PC's computer name
  8. Click Submit.
    Your campus PC should wake up within 20 seconds.
